in the making of my music video i have used a variety of shots and for these i have needed different pieces of equipment, for those shots were equipment was unavailable i have used ingenuity to create suitable platforms to produce the shots i have wanted
panning.
for most of the still camera shots and panning shots i have used a typical tripod stand.
tracking and worms eye view shots.
for these i needed a dolly so i could open with a tracking shot, as our department had no equipment for this i went to the design and tecnology department for help, they provided this for me.
a simple wooden board with wheels gave me the ability to get low worms eye tracking shots.

so after previously looking at and reviewing some of my favourite images i have come up with my cover art.
i have taken the Andy Warhol cover, with the banana and applied that cartoon print style of image to my artwork by cartooning the dancer on the cover i feel this has increased my artworks appeal to a mass market it takes away the male sexual orientation to the image and brings it down to a more innocent feel but still giving it a strong powerful image as it is unusual to see a sort of human cartoon hybrid image on the cover of a dance album.
for this image i have taken a typical HMV style advert with the dark background and bright pink writing giving it a familiar feel as most album adverts we see in the united kingdom are produced by HMV, the use of the wooden artists man-akin is a cheeky play on words with the catchphrase ‘ you’d be a dummy not to’, i feel this is quite a good advertising slogan as its basically shouting buy the album but in a powerful subliminal way as apposed to putting on the advert BUY IT NOW! as this is very common i wanted to use something the audience does not see every day to attract attention.
i have used a natural background to help the pink and black of the dancers legs stand out, i have used a very simple image as it is on the back cover an area second best to the cover but still a very important area as once a potential customer has been attracted to the main cover image the second place they look is the back , so the neutral colour with the bright in your face pink of the leg warmers is a powerful contrast and the scattered song titles make the image look very professional.
18th January.
well after much pain and errors i have found out your not aloud to imitate a police car, so my original idea had to be scraped, so after a few hours of brainstorming and planning i have come up with this.
song title: BAD BOYS; Alexandra ft flow rider
my idea involves 3 dancers from my school and the locations for my shoot will be the music corridor and dance studio.
opening scene: worms eye view of two closed double doors, silence at this point, then viewers here footsteps coming from behind the camera, dancer walks in front of the camera and enters through the double doors (at this point all that can be see in the dancers ankles, camera follows down the corridor at ankle level (tracking shot) at end of corridor dancer turns right out of scene.
scene 2. camera begins to raise panning right, wide shot of the dancer from behind, dancer enters the dance studio (camera follows) see two dancers in the corner chatting (cut to point of view shot of the dancer entering and walking towards the stereo) cuts to a close up of dancer 1′s bag and the dancers hand reaching in and pulling out CD (cover will be my cover art for the CD) cuts to mid shot of dancer putting CD into the stereo and plugging head phones into stereo.
scene two: cuts to a wide shot of the dance studio, and dancer 1 heading to the middle. this scene will be footage of the choreographed dance for the selected song. (range of camera angles will be used these include, high angles, low angles, close ups, mid shots, wide shots, long shots.)
scene 3: half way through there will be a close up of the headphone jack, and as the dancer is dancing she will accidently pull it out this causes the music to be played on the speakers the other dancers hear this and join in. range of camera shots used again.
scene 4: final scene, music stops fixed camera at far end of room dancers collect there stuff and walk out (fade to black out).
the finnished cover art »« my cover art and music video pitch.
hi every body,
ok album cover art, so iv told you what i think works well and what really doesn’t work well in my opinion, SO now its time to move on to actually coming up with idea’s for my own art work, advert and dun dalala the music video that if i can pull it off will be a thing of beauty, (1s again in my opinion
).
for my front cover i had three key images that helped me come up with my album art idea, the first was

i really want to try and create an image you dont see on most conventional album covers, i want some thing original and eye catching to incease attention to the album.
hopefully this image will be as effective as i have imagined it in my mind if not i will be going back to the drawing board and starting from scratch.
what makes a bad album cover
what then makes a good album cover
here are a few album covers that really shouldn’t have been made.
what were they thinking with the tweed medley and the cardboard background and the moustaches no no no.

I know its wrong but i find this very funny in a sick twisted way why did she agree to this horrible black and white dullness. the mast head should have been louder.

anouver photo shop gone too far …. why?

this with out doubt is the worst album name ever you cant have good album art with a name like that.

was this a craze or did every bad album cover in rock history feature people dressed like Conan the Barbarian

heino this would have be better off named hell no, why what is wrong with a white wall and unless heino mean rose’s this cover makes sense, none.

jasper carrots debut in the Russian band obv didn’t do any wonders for the album art.

this album has nothing going for it the image is boring and bland but as an image to go with julie’s 16 birthday it is so wrong on so many levels.
so now i have to come up with an album cover an album name and a band name hopfully i will be able to list my album with the greats not with these .
here is a list of 5 of my favourite album covers and why.

1. nirvana nevermind 1991.
This probably the most iconic and well known cover art due to the fact The Nevermind album cover shows a baby swimming toward a US dollar bill on a fishhook. the three-month-old infant is spencer elden, the son of the photographer’s friend Rick Elden. how ever when the cover was made the was concern about the penis showing, they were afraid that it would offend people, but relented when Cobain made it clear that the only compromise he would accept was a sticker covering the penis that would say, “If you’re offended by this, you must be a closet pedophile
i feel this is a go cover as it is a shocking image as in the day and age any picture of this sort is considered socially unacceptable.
this is probably the most shocking album art i have ever seen, due to the fact that the thought of it is so gruesome but the actual picture is intoxicating you cant help but want to look closer an that is the main role of an album art work to draw in a potential buyer.
the actual art work is of a buddhist monk named Hòa thượng Thích Quảng Đức, who burnt him self alive in protests over the persecution of buddhists.
3. The Strokes, is this it. 2001

Is this it, by the strokes is another iconic album art work, the way the black glove stands out against the white background and white skin gives an almost ghostly feel, the contrast between the two whites of the wall and the skin is very little this helps give a strikingly eye catching image of the contrast between the black and the white. i feel this iconic image helped 2 further this bands album sales as if u didn’t know who the band was i feel you would still inquire, due to this image.
4. five miles out, by mike Oldfield 1982

this may not be a very good album but i really like the art work for this, there is something really mesmerising about the plane coming out of the dark clouds heading to the calm beautiful Sky’s, it gives the impression that this album is an escape from chaos, also the art work works well with the albums title 5 miles out it gives the impression that sanctuary is only five miles away this could help album sales as the image depicts a journey it could possibly be advertised as a drivers album to help easy long journeys and stressful motorway jams.
just a thought ha.
5. pink floyd
probably the most recognised album art work in the world, due to the global success off pink floyd and the simplistic album art, the iconic light prism the image represents three things, the bands famous lighting, the lyrics and the request for a simple but bold design, the reason i have chosen this as one of my favourites is due to its simple and bold design, it stands out as there is not too much going on and the light rays draw the focal point to the middle of the image, i would like to do something similar for my album art as.
1. i don’t have a huge recording contract budget, so i can not set up a massive shot with loads of things going on as i don’t have the money
2. simple designs would suit this modern age, where people want to leave the hustle and chaos of city and work life for more simple living as i feel this is reflected in modern building why not take these open plan ideas and incorporate them into album covers
3. a simple image that co-insides with the album name or band name can make an album stand out.

Ok so I haven’t written a blog for a wile but as i was driving through France on the back of the motorbike yesterday, I began to think about my media assignment, while driving through many of the towns and city’s I began to notice posters for band tours and new album releases and there seemed to be a very common theme here in France the louder the posters colours the better and different areas of France advertised different genres, for the beginning of the trip in the cities such as Calais, the posters focused mainly on hip-hop, rap and electro adverts for albums and tour dates, they all seemed rather similar the main singer or leaders face planted on the front with brightly coloured, borderline neon back grounds. Were as the further south we went the themes began to change, and in the more rural areas the genres changed they were more focused on the rock and country themes from the looks of the posters you could see this change more easily as the posters for albums became darker in the themes or for the county bands the colours seemed to reflect the area they were placed in for some reason they seemed to match the colour of the soil, not particularly sure if that was purposely done but it seemed to give the band a local feel, so perhaps if I was to have a main focus for my album artwork I would want to give the album a local feel but would this work to my advantage or not, would the album feel to focused to a local area and hinder the expansion of the album worldwide or if its a good album would the artwork really matter that much so I have decided that when I have an internet connection (ha yes I’m out in the sticks of rural south France) ,that I will research all the so called greatest albums of all time and see if a main ingredient of success really is a good album package.
On the portfolio side of production I haven’t made much progress so I have decided to ask my music technology teacher about the fundamental parts of a portfolio and what he in his experience feels makes a good or I word I prefer to use, an outstanding album portfolio.
